Welcome
Welcome to our rebuilt website. We hope you order from our menu and pick up meals to go or dine in. Your support is appreciated. See you soon.
Website Goals & Design
Abugida’s website was created to help both vegetarians and meat lovers explore authentic Ethiopian and Eritrean cuisine. Located in the heart of Toronto’s Danforth neighbourhood, Abugida serves both local communities and visitors. The website has food and drink menus, ordering options, reviews, a translation tool, a blog with a subscription form, and social media links.
Development & Collaboration
The site was developed by Web Consultant Matthew Burpee of @mazesolutions in collaboration with Abugida’s owner, Elsa Shamebo, with a focus on user experience, accessibility, and content strategy. Launched in 2020 as the pandemic hit, it was rebuilt in 2023 and in 2025, and continues to be updated.
Technology & Standards
The site is powered by WordPress, utilizing the lightweight Twenty Fifteen theme by the team behind WordPress, Automattic. It incorporates tools like GTranslate, Jetpack, Dark Mode, and Rank Math for enhanced functionality. Adherence to HTML5, CSS4, JavaScript, and WCAG 2.0 AA ensures accessibility and inclusivity, as detailed in the Accessibility Statement. Regular testing with tools like Google PageSpeed Insights, Accessibility Checker, and the W3C Markup Validator maintains high performance and compliance.
Visual Elements
The website’s design features a dark green colour palette inspired by the restaurant’s walls. Photography and content are curated by the Web Consultant.
